A Family Run Business Since 1953
Our founder, Mr. Charles R. Grant, established the business in Washington, D.C., in 1953 in a small office on F Street. Mr. Grant wanted to create a client based business, where the agents knew their clients, listened to their needs, and educated them about their insurance options. He wanted to build a firm where the clients were people, not just names on a folder or in a file cabinet.
Mr. Grant’s strategy had proven successful, and in September 1970 Mr. Grant’s son, Ridgely, entered the family business. In May of 1975, Mr. Grant’s other son, Granville, joined the firm. Although the agency had its roots in Washington, D.C., the family’s roots were in Maryland. In 1976 the agency moved to Rockville, MD, and has been there ever since. In 1986 the Grants moved their office to its prior location at 620 Hungerford Drive, Rockville, MD.
To handle the company’s increasing number of customers, the Grant Insurance Agency has a very talented team of employees. Linda Grant worked part-time from January 1979 until February 2024. Judi Godbey has worked full-time since October 1982.
The Next Generation
A third generation of Grants entered the insurance world in 2004. After graduating from the University of Maryland in 2001 and working with Progressive Insurance Company for more than two years, Ashley Grant decided to join the family business in February 2004. In May 2004, Ryan Grant graduated from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. He came to work with the family at the end of August. Together, Ashley and Ryan will carry on the legacy of the Grant Insurance Agency and lead them into the future.
Grant Insurance Continues to Grow
On November 5, 2004, Mr. Charles R. Grant (“Chick”) died at the age of 87. He lived to see the business that he started back in 1953 celebrate its 50th anniversary. He also saw two of his 15 grandchildren enter into the family business. We all miss him dearly.
In August 2010, Granny Grant moved out West to handle our growing customer base. He settled in Tucson, Arizona, where he worked remotely for many years. Granny recently retired in December 2024 after 49 years in the insurance business.
In January 2022, Ridge Grant officially retired after 50+ years in the insurance business.
In October 2023, The Charles R. Grant Insurance Agency, Inc., celebrated its 70th anniversary. This is quite an accomplishment and milestone for any small business. We look forward to continuing our professional service for another 70+ years.
In January 2024, the office relocated 3 blocks away to 932 Hungerford Drive. We had spent almost 40 years in our last location, but it was time for a change. We are now located in Jackson Place South which is right in front of Montgomery College. See our Contact Us page for directions.
